I have had the honor and privilege of serving as Deputy Mayor for the last four of my nine years on the Brockport Village Board. I have been a proud resident of Brockport for over 40 years and a key employee of Lift Bridge Book Shop on Main Street for over 30 years.
Throughout my tenure on the Board, I have strived to improve our infrastructure, increase our tax base, and be an active participant in the life of the Village. A large part of this, over the last few years, has been applying for and obtaining the $4.5 million investment in our Village that comes to us through the New York Forward program. Because I understand the details of the application, the regulations involved and how to work effectively with the consultants from New York State, I am the right person to shepherd the grant through the next phase and see the projects through to completion. This will reinvigorate and beautify our Main Street and canalfront, expand our tax base, and increase sustainability without local tax dollars.
While I have worked with the Parks Committee we have made major upgrades to several of our parks, replacing and adding equipment for people of all ages and abilities. We are developing plans for more enhancements.
I have worked closely with every department in the Village government.
This variety of assignments reflects the interconnections and complexity of municipal government and the multifaceted needs of the people we serve. At this time of transition, Brockport needs a leader with this experience and understanding.
“Brockport needs a leader with experience and understanding — I’m ready to lead us into a bright future.”
I volunteer at the Welcome Center, the Arts Festival, and Morgan Manning House Museum events. I participate in Village activities throughout the year including Midnight Madness, Summer and Winter Serenades, Low Bridge / High Water, and canal-side events. I support the University arts programs and attend lectures there. Along with my husband, Dr. David Newman, I am active in the Brockport Jewish Community and organize many of its events.
Being embedded in the community in this way I am able to see the diverse elements that make our community strong.
I have been a key employee of Lift Bridge Book Shop on Main Street for over 30 years. I enjoy helping customers find just the right book or toy. Among other duties, I manage inventory and ordering, and coordinate books for the annual Rochester Children’s Book Festival.
Working for a local business in downtown Brockport, I understand the importance of retail to our community, the vibrancy that our local businesses bring, and the intricacies and challenges of running a small business.
Our two children grew up in Brockport, and walked to the Brockport Central Schools throughout their education, played in Brockport parks, and checked out hundreds of books from the Seymour library. As a daughter of two lawyers and having many siblings, I learned from an early age to listen to both sides of an issue, to make decisions based on facts and compassion and to stick with what I consider right. As a child of an army veteran I was taught that patriotism includes helping others.
I love living in Brockport, walking our streets and canal path, attending events at the University and around the Village, shopping Main Street and talking to the people. It is a Village to be proud of.
I am running for Mayor because I care about the Village and its people. Brockport has much promise and many challenges. I have the skills, energy and experience to face those challenges and achieve that promise. I want to continue the work that has been started and lead us into a bright future- creating together, planning together, working together.
